Submission Preparation Checklist

As part of the submission process, authors are required to check off their submission's compliance with all of the following items, and submissions may be returned to authors that do not adhere to these guidelines.
  • The submission has not been previously published, nor is it before another journal for consideration (or an explanation has been provided in Comments to the Editor).
  • The submission file is in OpenOffice, Microsoft Word, or RTF document file format.
  • Where available, URLs for the references have been provided.
  • The text is single-spaced; uses a 12-point font; employs italics, rather than underlining (except with URL addresses); and all illustrations, figures, and tables are placed within the text at the appropriate points, rather than at the end.
  • The text adheres to the stylistic and bibliographic requirements outlined in the Author Guidelines.

Author Guidelines

The purpose of the journal is to disseminate technical articles on all aspects of Utah geology and surrounding areas that are of interest to geoscientists as well as more popular-style articles that are of interest to informed laypersons. Manuscripts are welcomed from industry personnel, government geoscientists, and college researchers, including students at all levels. Because articles are electronically published and made available, we will accept manuscripts of any size with color figures and oversized plates. All topics of Utah geology are welcomed including topics on:


1. Stratigraphic nomenclature
2. Case studies
3. Oil and gas field descriptions
4. Mineral resource summaries
5. Update of an article previously publish by the Utah Geological Association
6. Geologic field guides
7. Archeological studies where geology is an important aspect of the study
8. Biological studies where geology is important factor in habitat distribution


The editors will not consider:
1. Policy papers
2. Editorial papers
3. Opinion papers
4. Promotional papers

INSTRUCTIONS
There is no limit on manuscript length. Color illustrations and photographs are encouraged. Oversized plates and large data sets are also acceptable.

1. The manuscript should be a Word document in a paginated, double-spaced, and single column format.
2. Line illustrations, oversized plates, photographs, and annotated photographs should be submitted as high-resolution (300 dpi) TIF, JPG, PNG, or PDF files.
3. The journal has a two-column format; line illustrations, photographs, and annotated photographs can be single column width, two-column width, or full page. Prepare figures and photographs to the final figure size you prefer. Please use Helvetica or Arial font style for your illustrations. Please do not use a font size less than 6 point.
4. Tables should be submitted as high-resolution (300 dpi) TIF, JPG, PNG, or PDF files or the native files used to create the table (Word, Excel, etc.).
5. Authors have the responsibility to obtain permission to use copyrighted materials in their articles to be published in this journal. Authors should credit the use of copyrighted materials in the figure or table caption or as instructed in the publisher's permission. Although U.S. Geological Survey reports are not subject to copyright, authors should give credit for their use as a courtesy. If you used any copyrighted material, please include a copy of the signed copyright release from the copyright holder.
6. The UGA is obliged to have authors of articles published in this journal and its other publications transfer copyright ownership to the UGA before the Association may publish the article. A "Copyright Transfer Form" is included in the instructions and available to download from the UGA website or sent to the author by the editor. Please sign and return a copy of the form to the editor of the journal at GIW@utahgeology.org.
